OVERVIEW

"The source of knowledge is experience; truth is what stands the test of experience"

DESCRIPTION

There is a global epidemic in cardiovascular and peripheral vascular diseases. National Health Institute (NIH) named Puerto Rico number one in the incidence of metabolic arteriosclerotic syndrome and diabetes. Our experts will provide statistical data to make us realize that we must educate physicians, paramedical personnel, health providers and government officials as a national need. Prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases in Puerto Rico is no longer an option but a necessity.

OBJECTIVE

This interdisciplinary two days summit will expose the participant to the new advanced endovascular and cardiovascular technologies. All participants will be together in a plenary session to discuss formal presentations, round table discussions and complicated clinical cases with a panel of experts. Also, the participant will acquire knowledge on how to make prevention and early diagnosis in cardiovascular diseases, learn about new cutting edge endovascular technologies and novel strategies in pharmacological management of diseases.

NEED ASSESSMENT

Puerto Rico has the largest incidence of Metabolic Arteriosclerotic Syndrome and Diabetes Mellitus in the United States of America. Puerto Rico also has the largest population of renal patients undergoing dialysis treatment. Prevalence of Metabolic Arteriosclerotic Syndrome in Puerto Rico population and Metropolitan Area residents is 43.3% (about 450,000 individuals). It has been quoted that 16,500 leg amputations are performed each year in Puerto Rico with a substantial cost to third party payers. To handle this cardiovascular disease epidemic, we as medical professionals, need to join forces with allied health professionals, hospital and insurance companies. Multidisciplinary management of diabetic foot and early vascular insufficiency diagnosis in claudicants (less than 50 years of age) is paramount. The use of catheter based technology in endovascular procedures allows us to treat more patients with cardiovascular diseases with shorter hospital stay, less pain and disability in a cost efficient manner here in Puerto Rico. When it comes to treat patients for the prevention, management and treatment or cardiovascular diseases, we as health professionals need to have some guidelines to help us communicate with a universal language aiming for the benefit of the Puerto Rican population.

OBJECTIVES

1. Update knowledge of early prevention, detection and management of Cardiovascular Diseases using varied educational formats including: Research Seminars, Professional Publications and Internet Communication.
2. Integrate the medical community to work together with other health disciplines in preventing, managing and treating cardiovascular disease.
3. Increase interdisciplinary communication and education among endovascular treatment including: Vascular Specialists, Surgeons and Interventionists.
